Dentistry is predominantly a surgical field with potential exposure to blood and saliva. Apart from bloodborne conditions, there are respiratory diseases that also pose a risk including newer epidemics and pandemics such as SARS and H1N1 Influenza outbreaks in the population. Some of the bloodborne conditions encountered are Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, Hepatitis D and G, Herpes and HIV. Immunizable childhood diseases are also important to understand. Diseases such as Tuberculosis, Influenza (seasonal flu as well as the new H1N1 flu) are also of concern with respect to transmission risks to employees as well as the patient. Understanding these common infectious conditions and implementing protective measures is not only pragmatic but essential in disease control at the clinical level as well as the community level. Personal protective measures such as immunization, use of appropriate and limitations of PPE, hand hygiene, patient and employee management measures will help control spread of such conditions in the dental setting.
