Community-Based Clinical Trials Network (CBCTN)

Project Background and Goals:

The Community-Based Clinical Trials Network (CBCTN) was established by the American Foundation for AIDS Research (AmFAR) in 1988 to expand and accelerate research into experimental HIV/AIDS treatments. The program draws on the expertise of physician-investigators who deliver medical care to HIV-infected patients in the communities where they live benefiting the active involvement of those local communities.

In 1995 CDN was selected as one of the 12 units nationwide to participate in the Foundation's Community Based Trials Network (CBCTN).  This three-year program is funded by the American Foundation for AIDS Research (AmFAR) and the first trial began enrollment in October 1995.  Six CDN sites will participate in AmFAR-funded trials.  In preparation for our first enrollments and for new unit staff, CDN has been conducting educational seminars at sites participating in AmFAR trials.  These trainings have re-oriented site personnel to CDN and specifically about the TMP/SMX protocol, and provided a forum for discussions about barriers to enrollment and adherence to protocols by patients at our sites.
