Cervical Cancer Prevention Training Project

Project Background and Goals:

The Clinical Directors Network of Region II, Inc. (CDN) was funded by the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research (AHCPR) and the Bureau of Primary Health Care (BPHC) to develop a program that disseminates and evaluates the National Cancer Institute's (NCI's) and the National Library of Medicine's (NLM's) Compact Disc-Interactive program entitled "Cervical Cancer: Screening for Life" .

The project is aimed at:

  1. Pilot testing and comparing two models of self-directed continuing professional education, the "Cervical Cancer: Screening for Life" compact disc interactive (CD-I) versus a standard self-learning program consisting of a printed monograph containing state-of-the-art recommendations for cervical cancer early detection.

  2. Evaluating the self-reported changes in knowledge, skills and self-efficacy of clinicians exposed to both types of learning techniques by surveying pre and post participant knowledge, attitudes and self-efficacy, and through medical records reviews.

At the end of this initiative, CDN will propose recommendations for the wide-spread dissemination of the NCI/NLM "Cervical Cancer: Screening for Life" compact disc interactive and for the development of other CD-I based programs which address other skills from which clinicians practicing in Community/Migrant Health Centers can benefit. Twenty Community/Migrant Health Centers in New York and New Jersey are participating in the Cervical Cancer Training Project.
