Women's Initiative to Save Heart (WISH): Cardiac Rehabilitation Women's Study

Project Abstract

The Women's Initiative to Save Heart (WISH) Study was initiated at Lenox Hill Hospital on June 1, 2000 under the direction of Nieca Goldberg, M.D. The study has two objectives:

  1. to conduct a formalized scientific pilot study to demonstrate that a cardiac rehabilitation program for women substituting an ECG-monitored low-impact aerobics class for standard multi-station exercise training will enhance patient satisfaction, compliance and outcomes; and

  2. to help women make the transition from the hospital-based Women's Heart Program to a community-based setting by extending the program an additional three months.

The Study sought to enroll a total of 110 women, 55 women per group, for 12 weeks of cardiac rehabilitation either at Lenox Hill Hospital (Traditional Exercise Group) or in a community-based setting (Women's Aerobic Group), then provide an additional 12 weeks of exercise and support in a community setting (the 92 nd Street YM-YWHA) and follow the cardiovascular and psychosocial outcomes for two years. Women between the ages of 35 and 85 who were referred by their cardiologist following a heart attack, coronary artery bypass grafting surgery, angioplasty procedure and/or stent placement or hospitalization to treat stable angina were eligible to participate in the program. Follow-up occurs at three, six, twelve, and twenty four months. Clinical Directors Network (CDN) has committed a psycometrician (master's level clinician) to conduct psychosocial, quality of life, nutritional and behavioral assessments for study subjects, and enters patient data directly into the database.
